How to Get Started On Your Frist African Safari.

The anticipation leading up to a safari in Africa is part of the magic. There’s something incredibly thrilling about imagining the vast landscapes, diverse wildlife, and unique experiences that await. Planning allows you to immerse yourself in the excitement, from choosing the perfect destinations and accommodations to researching the types of animals you might encounter and the best times to visit. It’s a journey in itself, filled with anticipation and dreams of unforgettable adventures amidst the beauty of the African wilderness.

Planning a safari can be overwhelming, especially if it is your first time. There are numerous factors to consider, and each decision can impact your overall experience. While the planning process may require time and effort, it’s all part of the adventure, and the reward of an unforgettable safari experience makes it all worthwhile.

To help you plan your first Africa safari, we have put together some answers to what we think are the most important questions when considering a safari. Please take a look below at our guide:

1. Where should I go?

Deciding where to go on your first safari is an exciting decision that can greatly enhance your overall experience. Most of our first-time clients prefer to ease into Africa and choose to visit the popular national parks and reserves in Kenya and Tanzania. The best piece of advice we can give you at this stage is to try not to pack everything into one trip. Rushing through areas in a one-week holiday really won’t give you the full impact of being on safari. By focusing on a few key destinations or experiences, you can fully immerse yourself in each one and truly appreciate everything it has to offer. We have experience and know that a jam-packed itinerary can lead to stress and exhaustion, detracting you from the enjoyment of your safari holiday.

Allowing for some downtime between activities can help you relax and recharge. Taking the time to savor each moment creates lasting memories that you’ll cherish for years to come. Spending more time in one place enables you to develop a deeper connection with the environment, wildlife, and local culture, enriching your overall safari experience.

2. Is there anything specific I want to see on Safari?

The next question that you should consider is, is there anything specific that you’d like to see while on your safari? Do you want to see the Big Five? Maybe you want to witness the Great Migration at the river-crossing season? Would you prefer a beach holiday and see marine life as well?

If you’re aiming to see all the members of the Big Five (Lion, Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Leopard and Rhino) on safari, it is important to plan your trip to the national parks in Kenya or Tanzania  where these animals are commonly found in savannas, grasslands, and open woodlands.

Different parks and regions between Kenya and Tanzania are renowned for their big game sightings, such as Masai mara National Reserve, Amboseli National Park, Serengeti.

3. How much does a safari cost?

The cost of a safari can vary widely depending on several factors such as the destination, duration, level of luxury, type of accommodation, activities included, and the time of year. Further questions we need to ask to work out the cost of your safari include:

  • How many people are travelling?
  • Do you have any specific hobbies?
  • When do you want to travel – high, low, or shoulder season?
  • What level of accommodation are you looking for?

In Africa, for example, safaris can range from budget-friendly options for basic camping safaris in national parks, to mid-range safaris for comfortable lodges or tented camps, to luxury safaris offering top-notch accommodations, gourmet dining, and exclusive experiences.
